Paolo Nutini - Sunny Side Up (2009)

Fans of Paolo Nutini’s debut album, These Streets might raise an eyebrow or two at this sophomore release. Produced by Ethan Johns (Kings Of Leon), Sunny Side Up features an eclectic and "rougher" range of songs that set it somewhat apart from its slick predecessor. Recorded in Ireland, Wales, New York, LA and the UK, Nutini--backed by his band The Vipers--tackles folk, reggae, soul and rock, with varying results. The Motown-esque "Coming Up Easy", the ballad "Worried Man" and the sea-shanty "Growing Up Beside You" are shining examples of Nutini's erudite songwriting skills, as is the charming, Dylan-esque "Tricks Of The Trade". But songs like "Pencil Full Of Lead" and "No Other Way", as well as his forays into reggae-lite and ersatz ragtime are less convincing, often sounding more like sketches than full songs. Whether Sunny Side Up is bravely eclectic or an incoherent disaster depends ultimately on the loyalty--and the patience--of the listener.

Porcupine Tree - Stars Die The Delerium Years 1991 -1997 [Remastered] (2005)

2005 digitally remastered & expanded reissue 2-CD exploring Porcupine Tree's Delerium era, incorporating album, EP and single tracks together with assorted rarities, new mixes and previously unreleased tracks. It also includes previously unreleased tracks such as the legendary 'Men Of Wood' as well as 'Signify II', 'Phantoms' the full eight-minute version of 'Synesthesia' and assorted rarities culled from the bands seven years with Delerium. Some tracks have been remixed for the project. In case you are worried about buying an album from a band labeled "progressive" - forget it in this case. Porcupine Tree are a rock band that are broader than that particular genre , as you might expect with an ex member of Japan on keyboards. This band is capable of music that is in turn extremely beautiful and contemporary.

Eels - Hombre Lobo -12 songs of desire (2009)

It may be four years since Eels' last studio album, Blinking Lights and Other Revelations, but frontman Mark Everett hasn't been resting on his laurels in the interim. He's been touring, releasing the mammoth Meet The Eels, writing the autobiographical Things the Grandchildren Should Know and recording and promoting the documentary Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives.

It would appear that Mr E. is incapable of just kicking back and stroking his beard; June 2 will see the release of the follow-up to Blinking Lights, Hombre Lobo. The album will be released by Vagrant, all twelve tracks were recorded in Everett's Los Angeles studio

Dave Matthews Band - Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King (2009 )

Produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance), Big Whiskey has been hailed by Rolling Stone as the group’s "heaviest album yet, both musically and emotionally," which went on to note: "Throughout, Carter Beauford beats out elaborate, propulsive groves; bassist Stefan Lessard lays down Flea-style funk bass lines; violinist Boyd Tinsley plays cresting, intense runs; and Matthews mirrors Moore’s saxophone lines with scatlike singing." Billboard, in a cover story on Dave Matthews Band, praised Big Whiskey as "its best album yet.

Tangerine Dream - Flame (2009)

Arguably the most important electronic act to emerge from the post-psychedelic scene, Tangerine Dream are pioneers who used analog and, later, digital synthesizers to create rich musical soundscapes. With Edgar Froese and Chris Franke at its core, TD has been fortunate to count among its ranks a host of electronic luminaries: Conrad Schnitzler, Klaus Schulze, Peter Baumann, Johannes Schmoelling, and Paul Haslinger among them. In the '70s, Tangerine Dream was faithful to the progressive rock movement in spirit if not always in sound, picking up where Pink Floyd's instrumental pieces ended.
