Barclay James Harvest - All Is Safely Gathered In: An Anthology 1967-1997 [BOX SET] [IMPORT] (2005)

All is Safely Gathered In is a deluxe 5 CD boxed set featuring eleven previously unreleased recordings, three tracks previously unreleased outside of Germany and one track previously unreleased on CD. The boxed set marks the first occasion that tracks from both the EMI Harvest and Polydor eras have been compiled together and includes a lavishly illustrated 80 page book telling the Barclay James Harvest story in the words of John Lees, Woolly Wolstenholme, Les Holroyd and Mel Pritchard. All is Safely Gathered In is an essential addition to the Barclay James Harvest catalog. Eclectic.

Paul Simon - Concert in the Park (1991)

Equipped with the unwieldy handle of "Paul Simon's Concert In The Park, August 15, 1991", this double CD finds Paul Simon backed by most of the New York session musicians and the native musicians from South Africa and Brazil who had accompanied him on "Graceland" and "The Rhythm Of The Saints".

Clocking in at almost two hours, "Concert In The Park" features excellent live versions of songs like "Graceland", "She Moves On", and "Me And Julio Down By The School Yard". Most of the arrangements stick close to the studio recordings, except for the fact that Simon has toned down the Brazilian percussion that dominated the "Saints" recordings, and re-done "Cecilia" African-style.
Paul Simon sings with style and conviction all the way through, and some of these songs are definitely better than the studio versions...just listen to the exquisite "Born At The Right Time" or the elegant "She Moves On".

David Byrne & Brian Eno - Everything That Happens Will Happen Today (2008)

In many ways, this is the freshest sounding and most directly impacting album of David Byrne's exceptional (and exceptionally overlooked) solo career. Eno describes his musical arrangements here as simple but inviting, and this is the perfect way to put it. The music is also lush, clever, and intoxicating, and it clearly inspired Byrne to deliver some of his most soulful and appealing performances ever.

I definitely suggest checking out the song, "Strange Overtones" (which, according to another reviewer, is available free here on Amazon), which is one of the major stand-outs from the album. DB opens his concerts with this song, and it's the perfect way to introduce new listeners to the distinctive soundscape of ETHWHT.

Andrew Bird - Noble beast [Deluxe Edition] (2009)

Andrew Bird is a unique artist. His music (a mixture of indie rock, folk, jazz and classical influences) and his mellow voice have made him a darling of critics and endeared him to many devoted fans. Noble Beast is a rich folk record featuring the many instruments of Andrew’s prodigious musical talent – violin, guitar, mandolin, glockenspiel, and whistling. He actually lists ‘whistling’ as one of the instruments he plays, and upon hearing the amazing clarity, depth and pitch of his whistle in songs like opening track “Oh No” you can easily understand why.

Lyrically, the intelligence and virtuoso vocabulary of Bird are evidenced in dazzling rhymes and vivid imagery that describe biology and nature (“Natural Disaster”, “Tenuous”). His dulcet baritone vocals swell so gently and intimately through his songs that you step into the strange and beautiful world he creates, where he somehow manages to make the scientific terminology for animal and plant species sound downright poetic. Noble Beast is intimate, delicate, beautiful and strange – quite like Andrew Bird, I’d imagine.

Federico Aubele - Amatoria (2009)

Buenos Aires-born songwriter/guitarist Federico Aubele’s going for a rico suave thing here, sort of like a downtempo Gipsy Kings. At a distance this may sound like generic latin lounge music – it’s kind of formulaic, but it’s a formula that works. This cd offers layers of acoustic and electric guitars with hushed lounge lizard vocals (in Spanish) over a trip-hop beat. Aubele could use a lyricist, and there are places where the drum machine becomes completely claustrophobia-inducing (the album is just out on the well-intentioned but sonically numbing Thievery Corporation’s label). Now for some good things about the cd. Aubele is an excellent, terse guitarist: there aren’t any wasted notes here. And the songs are pretty, most of them in moody minor keys. Plus, he’s dubwise. His reggae touches typically linger and reverberate in the background, lithe guitar accents cleverly and judiciously kicking in at unexpected moments.
